Deerhunter and Simian Mobile Disco isn’t the likeliest combination of bands in my head, but I guess it sometimes takes a small element of surprise before things really work. On the other hand this track most likely doesn’t sound anything like any other track you’ve heard this year. Yeah, that’s a pretty bold claim, but I guess Deerhunter and SMD can pull it off. I’ve always seen Deerhunter’s sound as pretty unique, and while Cryptograms was a bit of a struggle for me, the Microcastle tracks are a bit easier on me. But SMD decided to let Microcastle be Microcastle and in stead they’ve twisted some knobs on Octet taken from Cryptograms. The original track has a surprisingly bouncing feel to it, but of course SMD turn it up a bit more, add some bounce to the kick drum and give the instruments a little more juice. But it’s still unmistakably a Deerhunter track.
