Is it all over my face?

Such a simple question. Arthur Russell, a somewhat mysterious character, released this track under two different aliases, or at least I’m only aware of those two.

A trip around the internet taught me, that this track is supposed to have the worst vocals ever. Are they really that terrible? Ok, I admit that the term loose is probably an understatement here, because this track sounds like an improvised jam. And the vocals aren’t that great. The mixing is even worse. But, and there’s a but here. These two tracks are fantastic.

Many theories regarding the nature of this track floats around. I just like to stick to the one about the drummer being paid in coke before the session instead of after. That’s also supposed to explain the impromptu drumming style.

You wouldn’t label either of these tracks as tight, but compared to the “female version” the “male version” is spaced out. You know where we’re going when the first slice of whistling/kazooing/something pops up before the 10-second mark. I love it, and compared the sort of strict female version, the “male version” grooves like crazy. If you feel this, you feel it. If you don’t, tell me why in the comments.

There’s at least one other edit of the male vocal version– you can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGbqQ_RFXvE .

I just love the original full length version. The track in general – and the much-derided vocals in particular – are about the most strangely persuasive thing I’ve ever listened to. It sounds like a joke at first, but slowly settles in… and builds… and builds… and builds….

Nice, I’ll check out that version.

I really want to get my hands on some more tracks from Mr. Russell, do you have any recommendations on where would be a good place to start?

Oh man… basically, everything he’s done is great, so it really just depends on what you’re in the mood for. I would start with ‘World Of’ and ‘Calling Out Of Context’ albums and then move to the surprising country/pop record ‘Love Is Overtaking Me’.

Also, the documentary on him, ‘Wild Combination’ is great and can be purchased from iTunes store.

I think I already have ‘World Of’ somewhere, so I’ll give that a spin (: Will definitely have a look at the other releases too. I haven’t heard anything from him yet, that I haven’t loved.
