Layers in electronic music have always puzzled me. How do you know when you have enough? What amount of percussion is just right? While I’m not a producer myself, I imagine that you face these questions from time to time. Fortunately, when tracks are produced right, we rarely have to do so as listeners.
A brilliant example of this is Tensnake’s productions. Give Congolal a listen and try to pin out the different layers. When you focus on them one by one, they sound like they’re pulling the track apart, but looking at the full picture, you realize that everything is neatly tuned and organized to create a single, solid track. And of course you don’t mind the slightest when things take off again around the 5 minute mark.
