This is the first post in what will be my attempt to collect the very best from 2009. I’m not feeling organized enough to do actual lists with tracks, albums, remixes, artists etc, but I think this is a decent solution. Over the final 14 days of 2009 (and this decade), I’ll cram all the memorable tracks, artists, labels and remixes into this feature. We’ll kick things off with one of the first tracks I fell in love with this year.

There probably wasn’t a 12″ that was harder to get than this one. And it’s hard to imagine another release receiving just as much hype as this one turned out to get. A collaboration between the mysteriously anonymous Burial and the puzzling complex Four Tet did sound promising after all. What you did get, even if you never got your hands on that all-black piece of wax, was one of the finest tracks of the year.

A single, simple mantra is repeated throughout, hinting at both Burial and Four Tet’s sound while remaining completely it’s own. Of course Burial was allowed to add some flavour with indistinguishable vocal samples, but apart from that, the remarkable thing about this track is that it seems like an effortless collaboration.
