Coming as a surprise-attack when we least expected it, Sound Pellegrino became one of 2009′s most celebrated labels. As Teki Latex initially stated when creating the label, the point was to take the best from french house’s tradition for banging, over-the-top tracks and mash it up with a Berlin-inspired minimal approach. The result was a dancefloor onslaught of groovy house music that continued to be rough around the edges while borrowing a rarely-seen sense of groove from the minimal scene.
Through eight digital-only releases the buzz was slowly built and this fall Sound Pellegrino was on pretty much everybody’s lips. When we all realized that we may not care all that much about distorted house, but that taking the full step to appreciating more minimal stuff would be too much of a stretch, Sound Pellegrino seemed to fill that void beautifully by releasing a string of high quality releases.
The likes of L-Vis 1990, Rennaisance Man, Solo, Zombie Disco Squad, Momma’s Boy, and the mysterious Gucci Vump all released their tracks on the Pellegrino imprint, and each release seemed to put the previous to shame. It’s almost impossible to pick a favourite, not only because the releases are all incredible, but because they provided so diverse kicks. Renaissance Man’s krishna-house was followed by Momma’s Boy’s big-room minimal which made way for Solo’s tribal-infused beats. Because I’ve already expressed my love for Rennaisance Man, I’ll leave it to Momma’s Boy and Solo to explain why Sound Pellegrino was one of my favourite labels of 2009.

Head to Beatport for some overpriced but conscience-clearing tracks. I’m sure you’ve already grabbed the catalogue by now, but if you haven’t do yourself that favour and start 2010 with some great music.
