One of my New Year’s resolutions has to be to post more mixes. As I spend a significant amount of time hunting down fresh tracks, listening to a decent mix is a nice way to relax. The problem, however, is that these mixes are often poorly done and simply not worth the tracklist they teasingly offer. Technical skill vs. track choice has always been the essential balance to maintain when doing you mix, but when neither are found in the mp3-patchwork, it’s a major let down.

Lately, I’ve been leaning towards the track choice camp. It’s so much easier to fall in love with a mix with a tracklist that just begs for your attention without being unnecessarily commercial or selling out (whatever that means nowadays). The best mixes are the ones who mix solid, well-known tracks with that little hint of the unknown. Those mixes magically keep you coming back for more until you’ve explored, played, and loved every single movement. I’m beginning to think that I’ve found such a mix from Jah Pat.

I will not go into much detail with the technical level of this mix, as that’s not what matters here. It’s Jah Pat‘s tracklist for the NPIP004 mix that sets this mix apart. Combining renowned artists (Zomby, 2562) with tomorrows trendsetters (Joy Orbison, Floating Points) and those who are just stepping into the bright light (Kenton Slash Demon, George Fitzgerald), Jah Pat nails that combination perfectly. I’m still thrilled when I hear Aidy’s Girl’s A Computer or Tarantula, but a mix solely consisting of those tried and tested gems would just be another bland mp3-powered cry for attention. With just the right amount of leftfield tunes and obscure sounds, Jah Pat gives us a mix that’s worth coming back to. With the increasing noise and lack of patience, that’s truly an achievement.

Major kudos to No Pain In Pop for making this happen. It’s almost redundant by now, but take a minute to high five the guys at but does it float. I can’t thank them enough for being who they are.
