If the internet hadn’t existed, Julio Bashmore would probably have made dubstep. That’s of course a major generalization, but seeing that he’s the first house producer I’ve heard emerge from the Bristol scene, I don’t think it’s all that unlikely.

So, has he listened to bass music? Definitely. Although he doesn’t fit the conventional deep house spectrum, his music is still deep. You still hear those obscure vocal snippets hidden behind layers of clever manipulation, the occasional bass/percussion-driven drop, and that introvert sense of groove. Bashmore isn’t reinventing house music or housing up the dubstep scene, so most of this speculation is just a result of my own need to somehow label his music.

The truth is that those labels are largely irrelevant. Both in the “oh these genre-offsprings confuse me”-style, but also in the sense that he covers enough bases in his 10-minute Fact mini-mix that it would be laughable to fit him into one box. As so many other pioneers at the intersection between the UK-dominated bass music and largely American house scene, Julio Bashmore presents his own vision of this genre-blend, and while he isn’t as consistently creative as Untold or insistingly groove-centered as the deep house crowd, his productions are exciting enough to make you long for more just so you can get a better shot at pinning him down.
