Mosca

The first real music purchase I made in 2010 was Mosca‘s latest EP on the Night Slugs imprint. I couldn’t be happier with it. In many ways, this was a case of many “first times” for me. I had never listened to anything from Night Slugs before, which turns out to be an almost criminal act now. Apart from a few streams, I had never heard anything from Mosca either. That turned out pretty well too. (On a somewhat unrelated note, this was also the first release I bought in FLAC. Hello nice quality sound, goodbye laptop battery life.)

Mosca places himself between many different chairs. He isn’t a full-on dubstep act, leading the wobble-movements plans to take over your local dancefloor. His music definitely has some characteristics of both the future-garage sound and the LA beats scene without ripping of either of them.

And that’s most likely what makes his tracks so interesting. Naysayers may label Nike as overblown and unrealistically ambitious. I guess that’s a valid point, but I’m just amazed by the way this 10 minute track visits a small handful of different moods on its way.

The Square One EP has launched the Night Slugs label beautifully, and I’m definitely excited to hear what they’re going to hit us with in the future. Forward-thinking dubstep, bass music, or whatever you may label it as always has a place in my heart. You shouldn’t miss the remixes, though, as L-Vis 1990, Bok Bok, Roska, Julio Bashmore, and Greena have teamed up to support this release. With those names in the game, you can’t go wrong. Below is Greena’s remix to get you fired up.
