U can dance

I find pure techno intimidating. The combination of endless sequencers and heavily programmed drum loops always scared me a bit, although I can’t give a proper reason for it. Perhaps therefore, I have a strange relationship with DJ Hell. He’s obviously a legend, widely known for both his own work and his head honcho work for Gigolo. At the same time his production play with that fine line between robotic techno and warm & fussy melodies.

His work with Bryan Ferry on U Can Dance is excellent and a nice way to showcase the trans-genre mentality that’s slowly making even the most dedicated indie rock fan tap his feet. If you feel like that’s a situation you’ve been in before, where your pure genre suddenly gets crowded with hipsters, you should probably avoid this remix. It’s definitely not a poor remix, but Tim Goldsworthy is a craftsman who truly knows how to work a track together.

The rest of the remix package is exceptionally strong, and both Carl Craig & Simian Mobile Disco tries to over-Hell Mr Hell with their signature classic techno or bass loops respectively. While Tim Goldsworthy isn’t exactly conquering new sonic land with his remix, he certainly adds some extra oomph. The drama-knob is turned up to 11 with some massive synth action, a treatment that shows a different side of Bryan Ferry’s mumbling vocals. Add a loop or two of thumping drums and you have a less scary and more appealing track.

Graphic high five via but does it float. Did I mention that I like their site?
