Re.You & Rampa takes a simple piano pattern, some "uhh, baby" vocals, and some bouncy percussion, and deliver a simple, stripped down jam. It's what you would see as "DJ house tool" on Hardwax, if that's any help. But it's more than a tool. Admittedly, this belongs in the less subtle categories, but hey, it works, it's fun, and sometimes that's all you need. Solomun opens up the party on Diynamic Music sublabel 2DIY4 (with a little bit of effort, that is pronounced "to die for") with a three-pack of edits, and I think he does a good job. Averos

I had a track by Paxton Fettel on my radio show last week, and now there is more fresh talent queued up for your listening pleasure. This time, it is Theodor C and Aebeloe teaming up under their Averos moniker. Expect a sound on the lighter and more dynamic side of Theodor's previous output with Mislyd. Averos is a strange, organic creature. The childish yet haunting vocal samples fade in as the bassline gains speed and intensity. In some strange way, I can't help thinking of the wave of French banger-house while listening to this, if only for the liberal sampling technique. Averos, however, is more subtle than that. Jump to Soundcloud, and you will see that they are capable of much more nuanced productions. It's not that Averos lacks those nuances, but rather that the track relies on a structure that often allows half-arsed producers to hide their sub-par skills. Here, that is clearly not the case. Daemon

Kenton Slash Demon - Daemon [audio:http://c194071.r71.cf1.rackcdn.com/Daemon.mp3] You are probably already aware that I have high hopes for Kenton Slash Demon, and, as we get near the end of their Schwarzschild Solution trilogy, I hope you will agree that they are ready to take a more prominent spot on the house music scene. I would still argue that Sun is hard to beat, simply because it still sounds so refreshing, even a while after its release. Should I change my mind, however, the third and final release, Daemon, would be a strong candidate to take over that position. While not as surprising as Sun, the EP takes the duo a step towards a new territory with a stronger melodic sensibility, not unlike what they explore with When Saints Go Machine. I still remember hearing this track as part as their mix from Spot 2010 and noticing that it had a catchiness to it that I had not seen coming from KSD. It's not as straight up club music, as I had come to expect from the two. Then again, the blend of Nikolaj Vonsild and Jon Philpot's vocals with the thumping bass keeps the sound organic and edgy enough that the track can hardly be considered a break with their previous sound. This, of course, only makes the comparison with the two's main act even more compelling, since what I have always enjoyed the most about WSGM has been their ability to package elements that you never thought you would enjoy this much into a very likable package. graphic high five via Carl DeTorres

Loss

SCB - Loss [audio:http://c194071.r71.cf1.rackcdn.com/LossSCB.mp3] Over the past couple of weeks, I've been playing a lot of Paul Rose's music on my radio show. As you know, he's behind the Scuba and SCB aliases, releasing dubstep and house/techno, respectively. It's not merely that difference, however, I've been enjoying. After finding a dubstep compilation from 2007, it struck me how... 2007 it all sounded. An artist like Burial, who had a track on the release, had obviously moved a lot since then, but mainly in one direction. Rose, on the other hand, has explored several. Of course, his sound is still undeniably his own, but the difference in mood, texture, and technique was striking. It was with those thoughts in mind that I sat down to listen to Loss, his latest output on Aus Music. The most obvious parallel to draw would be to his recent contribution to the Mosaic compilation, yet Loss is a completely different beast. And Rose is well aware of this. The track almost sounds like a parody of the recent surge of sample-heavy dubstep, and although the female vocals are almost comprehensible, they make absolutely no sense on a closer listen. I would never suggest that Rose is poking fun at the scene and its self-absorbedness (I would secretly hope so, but that's for another time). I would, however, like to think that this is the unpretentious vibes of Berlin that once again reveal themselves in Rose's music and give us yet another reason to appreciate his output under the SCB moniker. graphic high five via reform.lt
